What Is Transliteration?
Transliteration converts text between writing systems based on pronunciation — it is not a translation. Meaning stays the same; only the script changes. This is different from romanization (transliteration specifically into the Latin alphabet) and from translation, which converts meaning between languages.
Transliteration vs Translation
| Transliteration | Translation |
|---|---|
| Changes the writing system | Changes the language |
| Keeps the original meaning | Expresses the meaning in another language |
| Often follows pronunciation | Focuses on meaning |

Chinese to English Transliteration
Chinese to English transliteration converts Chinese characters into the Latin alphabet using Pinyin, the standard romanization system for Mandarin. It shows how Chinese characters are pronounced, without translating their meaning into English. This is different from Chinese to English translation, which converts the meaning of the text instead of its pronunciation.
English to Tamil Transliteration
English to Tamil transliteration converts English letters into Tamil script based on how the words sound. It is useful for typing Tamil phonetically using an English keyboard, without needing to memorize the Tamil script layout. The result follows Tamil pronunciation, close to the ISO 15919 romanization standard.
English to Hindi Transliteration
English to Hindi transliteration converts English text into Devanagari script based on pronunciation. It lets you type Hindi phonetically using English letters, which is common for messaging and quick typing. The output follows Hindi pronunciation rules rather than translating the words.
English to Urdu Transliteration
English to Urdu transliteration converts English text into Urdu's Perso-Arabic script based on sound. Urdu does not have a single universal romanization standard, so results can vary between tools depending on the transliteration scheme used. This tool provides a common phonetic approximation to help with reading and typing Urdu.
Japanese to English Transliteration
Japanese to English transliteration, also called romanization, converts Japanese kana and kanji into the Latin alphabet using systems like Hepburn romanization. It represents how Japanese words sound, without translating their meaning. This is commonly used for language learning, typing, and reading Japanese names.
Arabic to English Transliteration
Arabic to English transliteration converts Arabic script into the Latin alphabet based on pronunciation, commonly following systems like ALA-LC romanization. It helps readers who don't know the Arabic script pronounce Arabic words and names. Since Arabic has sounds without a direct Latin equivalent, different transliteration systems can represent the same word slightly differently.
Chinese Transliteration
Chinese transliteration most commonly refers to Pinyin, the official romanization system for Mandarin Chinese pronunciation using the Latin alphabet. It is widely used in language learning, keyboard input, and for writing Chinese names in English text. It works in both directions: Chinese characters to Pinyin, or Pinyin to Chinese characters.
